5/28/12

The holiday weekend provided some extra time for work on the racecars.  I have Steamy up at my place for some needed TLC.  First on the list was getting the car running again and after some simple troubleshooting I found that the ECU was not getting power.  A few loose connections in the relay box were the culprit.  Once the ECU had power it was evident that the fuel pump relay was working, but the fuel pump was not.  Even connecting power directly to the pump did not do the trick, so out with the old in with a new pump.  The car fired right up after that change.  Here is a list of the other work done to Steamy to get it ready to run:

  • Thorough cleaning of the entire car
  • New battery
  • New air filter
  • Painted exposed metal on the frame & pedal cluster & shifter
  • Re-worked the shift lever on the engine for better alignment & stiffness
  • Cleaned and lubed up the pedal cluster for easier movement
  • Painted the muffler
  • Camera Mount for GoPro
  • Stiffen the nose cone mounting
  • Added return spring to the throttle pedal
  • Permanently mounted the Radiator / Duct

Last big item on the list is to set-up the car, which should happen this week.

Some progress was also made on Insanity over the weekend.  The original hubs are now permanently welded to the new stub axels, this is a change to the original design that allows us to run larger wheel bearings.  So, the front uprights are now complete minus some new brake lines to the brake calipers.

The next big task now is to measure the movement of the suspension and the unsprung mass so that I can determine the correct springs & damper to order.  Once springs and dampers are ordered then the pedal cluster is the only major task left!
